The Chainmen

Not one family but a dozen, related mostly by trade and marriage. They keep the police stations, the parishes, the night gates and the notary desks: anywhere the job is to hold a thing shut and be trusted about it. They can tell when you mean it, which makes them poor company and excellent witnesses. They still strike the anvil at a swearing-in. Most of them could not tell you why.
