Back to the seasonMick Boyle - with Hexi
Exhibit 2.01
Head of a house. Came up the stairs uninvited and had herself announced.
“Hexi.”
Exhibit 2.02
The woman on the front desk belongs to a house. Twenty years of it.
“She's Devi, Nick.”
Exhibit 2.03
The sign-in book was in the building, then it was not.
“Precinct Nine had it for nine days.”
Exhibit 2.04
It left Precinct Nine and no police station has held it since.
“Then it went out of the building, and it did not go into an evidence locker, has not been in a police station since.”
Exhibit 2.05
A house, not a person. Where the sign-in book went.
“Daughters of Dali.”
Exhibit 2.06
A house is not an answer. The question was always which room, and whose name.
“You should have asked for a name.”
The Front Desk - with Vera
Exhibit 1.01
Vera doesn't claim to know who came through the door. Only who signed the book.
“People misremember. The book does not.”
Exhibit 1.02
Halloran in at 4:20, alone, and up the stairs. A call through the switchboard at 9:40. The front door locked at ten past ten.
“I came on at two. There were eleven visitors between two and eight, all signed. Mr. Halloran came in at four-twenty, alone, and went up. He did not come down. …”
Exhibit 1.03
Vera walks through the whole day without a pause. The police have asked her three times. She has asked herself every night for nine months.
“You didn't have to think about any of that.”
Exhibit 1.04
Even Halloran, in his own building. Vera signed him in at 4:20.
“Everyone signs.”
Exhibit 1.05
Eleven people signed in between two and eight that day. Vera can't remember any of them.
“They are in the book.”
Exhibit 1.06
Precinct Nine took the visitors' book for the day he died. In nine months Vera has asked for it back four times.
“In writing.”
Exhibit 1.07
What Halloran said on the 9:40 call. Vera won't repeat them: she can't prove what he meant.
“If I say them out loud, you will decide what they meant. And then that will be what they meant. Forever. And I will have done that.”
Exhibit 1.08
Halloran taped the people who came to see him, and didn't always say so. Vera is on his tapes too.
“It is on a tape, Mr. Apple. That is the opposite of bothering me.”
Exhibit 1.09
A Thursday, on Halloran's tape. Vera signed ten people in and couldn't remember four of them.
“You signed ten people in and you don't remember four of them.”
Exhibit 1.10
It has happened before. Vera says she doesn't count them, then admits she does.
“...I count them.”
Exhibit 1.11
Vera had told no one and made Halloran promise the same. He said he'd look into it anyway.
“I'll look into it.”
